Is your website doing more harm than good?
Here’s a short story to highlight the importance of keeping your website information updated and informative:
This past christmas eve my wife and I were interested in attending a traditional candlelight service. We searched local church websites and found one close to home. Their website seemed to be kept up to date although obviously a dated design. Their website advertised a 7:30pm candlelight service with traditional hymns and communion. We decided to arrive around 7:10 and upon pulling in to the parking lot got the feeling that we were not at the right place. The parking lot was already full of cars and no one was walking in to the church. We quickly double checked the website and address and we should have been 20 minutes early? Due to the church being a small 1 room building we weren’t comfortable walking in to the middle of the service. We looked around and noticed their marquee on the street advertising a 7pm service only. Obviously disappointed, we drove around town until we found a church with a 7:30pm service.
You see their website was actually hurting them more than it was helping. I’m sure we weren’t the only ones who arrived only to find out we were late. Their advertising was actually frustrating potential visitors. No one (especially first time visitors) likes to feel out of the know. A website can be a powerful tool for ministry and businesses but if it is a false representation of your company (or is displaying incorrect information) you’re actually better off not having one (yes, as a web designer I did just say that).
